Position Summary: New York University (NYU), a member of the Association for American Universities (AAU) and one of the world’s premier private institutions for academic excellence, seeks applications and nominations for the position of Chief Human Resources Officer. The primary focus of the Chief Human Resources Officer is to provide vision and leadership to ensure that human resources at NYU is aligned with institutional priorities and those of the new President, attuned to changing workplace demographics and supportive of individual employees.

Linda G. Mills will become the 17th President of NYU on July 1, 2023. Dr. Mills is the Lisa Ellen Goldberg Professor of Social Work, Public Policy, and Law at NYU. She is also the Executive Director of the NYU Center on Violence and Recovery. She has been NYU’s Vice Chancellor and Senior Vice Provost for Global Programs and University Life since 2012. In 2002, she was named Vice Provost (and in 2006 Senior Vice Provost) for Undergraduate Education and University Life.
The Role
The Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) will provide vision and leadership to ensure that human resources at NYU is aligned with institutional priorities and those of the new President, attuned to changing workplace demographics and supportive of individual employees. The CHRO will work with a talented Human Resources team to develop a mission and shared goals that emphasize service, collaboration, and communication. Reporting directly to Martin Dorph, Executive Vice President and working closely with President-Designate Mills, this critical role provides strategic and transformational leadership in the development and implementation of all matters relating to employee-focused functions of the University, including Global Benefits, Global Compensation, Employee and Labor Relations, HR Communications and Engagement, Talent Learning and Organizational Development, HR Strategy and Solutions Center, and Youth Program Compliance. The CHRO is responsible for HR matters for the University. The CHRO is responsible for HR matters for the University. This does not include NYU Langone Health, which is comprised of Langone Hospitals, the NYU Long Island School of Medicine, and the NYU Grossman School of Medicine (which includes the academic, ambulatory, and research missions).
The CHRO will create and enunciate a vision for human resources at NYU at the strategic level and lead the implementation of human resources strategies and initiatives with an intentional focus on alignment with the University’s mission. President-Designate Mills has emphasized a number of key priorities for the University that will inform those strategies and initiatives. Those priorities in the HR space include improving the overall employee experience at NYU and increasing overall employee satisfaction and quality by continuing to build a diverse and inclusive community. This position serves as a catalyst for change to understand stakeholder needs and translate those into dynamic vision, programs and practices for all employees across the University. NYU is committed to identifying and implementing best-practice HR services, and the CHRO will collaborate with administrative and academic leadership to identify approaches and develop policies and practices that improve overall services and support to the campus and increase efficiencies. While this leader needs to remain well-informed about external pressure points, they also will act to remain fully engaged with employees, to effectively anticipate and meet their needs at all stages of the employment cycle. The CHRO serves as an institutional leader on all matters of diversity and inclusion, actively seeking new ideas, experiences and thought leaders to create programs, opportunities and pathways for staff, which are free from bias and focus on ensuring a demonstrated commitment to cultural competence. Qualifications: Required Education
Bachelor’s degree in human resource management or a related field

Required Experience
10+ years relevant experience in human resources leadership, including strategic leadership and managerial responsibilities in a highly matrixed and decentralized organization.

Preferred Education/Experience
Master’s degree in a related field is highly preferred. Professional experience in higher education and/or an academic healthcare setting is valued.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities The next CHRO should have:

  • Ability to think strategically, collaborate with others at all levels of the institution, build consensus, influence decisions, manage change, articulate priorities, and implement human resource programs that reflect the University’s mission and goals and elevate the HR function.
  • Effective working knowledge of federal, state, labor and employment laws that serve as the foundation for human resources policy and practice. Demonstrated ability to interpret, understand, and apply laws and regulations related to employment, benefits administration and labor relations in large and complex organizations. Experience working with unions is strongly desired.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, engage and inspire a highly effective, cross-functional team of human resources professionals.
  • Strong listening and communication skills; a presence that earns trust, confidence, and respect; and the ability to lead by influence and example.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to organize, summarize, and effectively communicate initiatives, goals, and priorities to a diverse group of constituents.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement policies, systems and best practices to ensure inclusive and equitable workplace.
  • Understands multiple cultural frameworks, values, and norms.
  • High degree of initiative, judgment, discretion, and decision making, along with being able to analyze situations accurately and taking effective action as needed.
  • Demonstrated adaptability to meet changing demands. Must be flexible and available to leadership, faculty and staff on an as-needed basis.
  • Demonstrated strategic leadership, planning, change management and process improvement skills.
  • Proven accuracy and attention to detail in managing multiple initiatives and priorities, along with experience in simultaneously implementing projects and events across multiple time frames (short, mid and long-term).
  • Proven track record of delivering successful outcomes using a data-driven approach.
  • Experience managing teams and budgets in a highly complex organization. This includes experience hiring, developing and retaining high-performing professional teams, as well as evaluation and retention of and change management for existing teams.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, persuasive presentation and public speaking skills.
  • Ability to handle highly sensitive information and confidential documents appropriately.
Additional Information: In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is USD $515,000.00 to USD $585,000.00. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as, market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses, clinical compensation, or other items.
